Well I did it. I went and ordered and got Bailey the Ruff Tough Kennels Large unit. Bailey is a big and well built male Vizsla. He "fit" into the Medium crate (shown on the left) but it was tight.
After taking some measurements of the Jeep, I determined I could get a large in with a medium crate side by side. Chloe is fine in hers, but the large is actually too big, but there is no in between. (Update: Feb 17, 2014. A friend commented that there was an intermediate size crate. My mistake was thinking the words, medium and intermediate were interchangeable. Guess I was thinking of shirt sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL)
Fixing the height difference problem:
With the tops level I could then bolt a 1" wide 1/4 inch steel flat bar using 3/8" bolts to hold them together with a strap holding them down between the seat latch plates on each side of the inside of the Jeep.

Looks like a good solution. I agree, it seems like a big jump from an intermediate to the Large. Sure the first ones weren't mediums instead of intermediate? It should only be a 3" step in height from an Intermediate to a Large (23" to 26")
Hey Rod, I'm pretty sure the two you have are Mediums, because they have the handle on top. The handle goes away at Intermediate and Large, so I think you stepped from the Medium to a Large. The Intermediate is the one inbetween.
Do you know if there's any retail store in Northern California carries this crate in store? I want to put 2 large crates in the back of my 2007 jeep commander.
Not that I'm aware of - generally they are shipped direct from the manufacturer through a number of online retailers. HuntinDawg.com has a good reputation and is a solid dealer with Ruff Tough. Expect about a 2-3 week lead time delivered to your door.
